Breaking Light – Birth of a Hero (Book1)

firewooks

As America finds itself hurtling toward a major election in 2032, the country finds itself trapped in divisions, multiple demonic forces, and corruption. No white knight has emerged to bring unity in the election of the next President. Out of this rubble a small church deep in the Cascade wilderness of the The American Northwest leads the nation and plays a major role in destroying a network of dark forces to move a strong Christian leader to the new Presidency almost overnight. This  first book of this Breaking Light series, Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero, ends in November of 2032, as Mark Pearson celebrates with this wilderness church and others the win of the country’s Presidency.

This wilderness church, Sunodia, uses an online network of secure computers with church leaders across the world, called The Phoenix, to do most of their communications ministry. This Phoenix name refers both to their small core group as well as their larger electronic network of seriously committed churches. This network is calling the nation to repentance and the transformation of America.

Healing of the Hearts (Book 2)

Healing of the Hearts

In the second book of the Breaking Light series, Healing of the Hearts (not out yet), the new President is aware creative commons: Healing of the heartthere is much wounding and a deep need for healing and reconciliation, even within the church. Mark Pearson, as the new President,  has a vision to lead the nation to this healing and to an awakening by mobilizing the church, in unity, to take the lead.

Mark is saying in a pre-inaugural speech to Christian leaders:

‘I want to see a significant work of God in the restoring of America.’

I want to see healing, reconciliation, and a bold work of the Holy Spirit in this nation. I believe it can happen.”

Soon you see a flashback from 2033 to 2014: a wounded soldier is brought back from the Middle East and is at Walter Reed Hospital. He is on life support and critical. From his bed, the soldier stares at the ceiling and has no voluntary movement. Paralyzed. The soldier’s father, a billionaire businessman, offers to pay a famous and wealthy Christian singer whatever she asks if she can bring his son out of wherever this is – and they don’t know what it is, yet. The businessman only pays if she is successful, but he believes God can use her for the healing. Down the hall from the soldier is a second soldier with his face blown away by an IED and now blind and angry. The singer realizes the blind and angry soldier holds the key she needs for the healing of the soldier on Life Support. The singer will need more than her angelic voice and prodigious beauty to see it happen.

In some posts here soon, you will see each of the key characters in the book are created from people who have inspired me deeply: The President, the singer. a very famous doctor, a German theologian, and more. Every one exists or existed in real life. The soldier on life support and paralyzed? That’s me. In 1989 I was suddenly paralyzed from the shoulders down and told by the doctors I would never walk again. I walk today by God’s grace.

The Battle for Your Heart

I love the part in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings: Two Towers where Gandalf marches into the castle where King Theoden lives as a destroyed gelding of his former self, bound by his demons. With a few rhema words spoken in authority, the King is released and transformed before your eyes. Theoden is really still the gelding, however. He is still bound. He’s not the stallion yet.

War is upon you

Copyright (under fair use): Aragorn speaking to Theoden

Even as Theoden celebrates his healing, we see the dark army marching to Rohan. The army has a single purpose: to decimate the world of men. Villages are burned, women and kids are slaughtered. With each day, they are closer to Rohan.

Aragorn: There is a war going on.
King Theoden: I will not risk open war.
Aragorn: Open war is upon you, whether you risk it or not.
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Tolkien

What does this say about the Church? To quote John Eldredge, “Things are not what they seem. This is a world at war. Each of us has a crucial role to play”.

“Friends, we are now in the midst of an epic battle, a brutal and vicious war against an Enemy who knows his time is short. Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not”
John Eldredge, Waking the Dead

It is important to realize, however, that this is a battle of the heart, an affair of the heart. Our hearts must come to a place of enlightenment where we can see in the Spirit.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.”
Eph 1:18 NASU

Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero – Excerpt

aragorn300After the dinner, Mark stood again. “…Years ago as a child I remember growing up in the Northwest. I remember sitting in my mother’s lap by the fireplace as she read to me out of a children’s Bible. She read about some real heroes that were unbelievable. There was Moses, Daniel, Elijah, Jonathan. Remember Jonathan? Those Israelites were small in number, and the thousands of Philistines with iron weapons were camped to defeat them. Saul and Jonathan were the only Israelites with swords, and Saul was asleep under a pomegranate tree. Jonathan got up that night and, with his armor-bearer, said ‘Let’s get ‘em.’ They killed 20 in a few minutes time and ended up routing the entire Philistine army. Love those stories—and the heroes.”

“Later my mother took me to meetings where I met some real heroes, leaders in the eyes of my mother, and with them she challenged me. One day she gave me my own Bible. In it, the words of Jesus were in red. ‘I thought,’ I told her, ‘that what Jesus did was more important than what he said.’ She told me I was right. ‘Then,’ I asked, ‘why don’t they make a Bible with what Jesus did in red?’”

“She smiled and gently replied. ‘You are right, but they don’t make Bibles that way. When Jesus lives in your heart as Savior and Lord, your hands become the hands of Jesus.’”

“‘I want that.’ I told my mother. And she led me to the Lord.”

“Some day, when my life story is written, I pray my works might be seen as those of Christ and, in that sense, ‘in red.’”

“We each have our dreams. For each of us, the temptress calls, like the singing siren, and lulls us from taking any conscious action. We tend to avoid the pain of rejection, doubt, and disappointment and have numbed ourselves from the epic story of a life fully lived to which God calls us. To sleep through your dreams is to choose a life of restless nights and unfulfilled passions. I applaud the work of this small group that now challenges every one of us and yes, even the sleeping church. God’s invitation to each of us is to seize the divine, or kairos moments, which are found in the needs of other people’s lives and to speak that moment into them, to encourage them to take hold of their own epic story, even as you take hold of your own moment.”

On the battlefield

carlanimWriting “fiction” is so much fun. Real world stuff, like the 5-yr old battery that died in my car and the car needing a new battery, is not fun. The folks at Shari’s gave me the jump I needed to get to the car place. All thanks to the staff a Tualatin’s Shari’s where I was copyproofing my book that day.

I’m now deep in developing the second book in the Breaking Light series: Breaking Light: Healing of the Hearts. The entire book series describes the restoring of the American Nation and opens in 2032. The first book ends with an outstanding Christian man as President (Mark Pearson) with the miraculous help of a small non-denominational “Phoenix” church based deep in the Cascade Mountains of Washington.

In this second book, we are using a new dynamic editing method. The first book was so interactively authored that even with four external edits we missed several issues. This time we installed Grammarly internal to our Microsoft Word, and it dynamically checks for contextual spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, style, vocabulary enhancement, tense (to minimize past tense), and plagiarism as I write. We still do eternal developmental editing and some level of human copyediting.

We did run into a major problem in development editing of the second book. That problem is fixed now and we are moving forward again. We have one heck-of-a-story now. Thanks to all who are helping. We should have the sample chapter for Book 2 back up soon. The book focus is on healing. Incidentally, the real-life Dr. Carson’s bus is named “Healng Hauler”.

Our main computer has been down all year until we have funds to fix or replace, and we’re doing the book on a laptop that was given to me. The laptop is new, and is demon-posessed. It does strange things at time, such as the cursor jumping suddenly to another place in the document or a paragraph disappearing for no reason. The estimated repair cost for the main computer is about $210. If more than that, we’d probably replace the computer.

Cheers and ever onward!

Restoring America -Carl Townsend

“Paralysis (masquerading as “confusion”) haunts every man when a looming decision will require a lot of us.”
John Eldredge

Restoring America

Founding Fathers

I want to see American restored. Like Nehemiah, I share a deep pain for my country (America) that has lost its way – no visioon, no passion, no leadership, no freedom, and no security. It hurts. There is a deep, deep burden there to see the America again for which those early forefathers bought with, sometimes, their lives.

In this lostness I see two churches. One is a church that tries to adapt to a dying culture and paradigm. This church, as in Germany before World War II, is experiencing a slow death in America. The members hardly recognize their dying and they continue to do what they’ve always done as the nation continues to fall, trying to adept to a failing culture. This is the cultural church.

The other is the confessional church. This Church sees there is a war, a spiritual war. They move to the front line, risking everything. Like Nehemiah, they take on the burden, the pain. We see Nehemiah praying and fasting for 40 days, asking God to forgive him and the nation. In World War II Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a part of this Church.

So I asked God what this meant for me.

I felt led to begin a multi-book Christian fictional novel that shows a path to national rebirth.

The story follows the strategies identified by George Otis (see his Informed Intercession: Transforming Your Community Through Spiritual Mapping and Strategic Prayer) where Otis found total transformation (spiritual, political, economic, healing, agricultural) had already started in certain cities and regions. The key components that were always there in each story included persevering leadership, fervent, united prayer, and often power encounters, diagnostic research and spiritual mapping. The basic problem today lies not with a particular person or political party, but rather is spiritual. There is a real war going on, and God calls you to be a part of it.

I started by defining some aspects of this story in the novel. In the first book of the series, the leadership is established.

The story is positive, uplifting, and exciting. You see hope and faith. The bad guys don’t stand a chance. God is in charge and this Church is committed to God’s authority.

  • The story has mystery, adventure, romance, risk, suspense.
  • It’s a heart story. Lots of hearts, romance, and love.
  • It is a VERY positive story full of hope and faith. The bad guys are out of the WH and Congress by the end of the first book. From that there is a lot of healing to do.
  • The conflict is real. We almost lose our protagonists at times. The actions of the bad guys, however, don’t dominate the story line. The story is driven from the characters and their relationships.
  • The story is biblically-based.
  • The plot line and story is believable. It is built from the stories of what God has done in my life and the lives of others. Sure, there are miracles, but no magic hat tricks.
  • Lots of music. Music is one of the only activities that activates, stimulates, and uses the entire brain. Book 2, in particular, has even more than Book 1. Dancers as well. It is no accident that Psalms is the longest book in the Bible.
  • There is overt and some direct evangelism in the story.
  • The story is highly mythic. The story begins with a lone young man striking out on a desolate wilderness trail to find a spiritual community he has heard about. The wilderness is not only physical, but also emotional and spiritual. In the second chapter there is a mist, a river, and more. All are mythic symbols. At the beginning our young man is frustrated, unable to change anything from his cultural church. In the second chapter he is frustrated, lost in a mist (another symbol), and has fallen on the ground and lying in the trail. He can hear the river (another symbol) and struggles to find the water he needs. It is at this point he meets the confessional Church.

You see all of these in Book 1. An early copy of my first chapter is online and free here. (The map in the chapter can be blown up on the PC using Shift-Ctrl buttons on the keyboard & mouse), the entire book is at Amazon.com. I’m working on Book 2 now. It is really fun.

Here is Carl’s book on the Nehemiah story:

Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality – $18.86 by Carl Townsend (PB) (Non-fiction)
Carl in this book tells the story of Nehemiah. The nation was without vision, passion, or security.. Sounds like America today! He turned the nation completely around in 52 days. At the same time he faced internal and external warfare.

 What”s Next?

Carl is hard at work on Book 2 in the Breaking Light series. The working title is Breaking Light: The Healing of the Hearts. Don’t expect a lot of political games as the new President begins his term. He is far, far more interested in seeing healing and being a catalyst for healing. Lots more music. The President is shifting leadership to the people and making the government smaller and less visible. Also you will discover the back story of the first book made visible in Book 2.

Getting Your Message Through Part 1- Carl Townsend

megaphoneIf your are serious about God’s call on your life, God will give you  a burden, a message. You then begin to respond that call and call other people to join you in terms of that call God is placing on your heart. That is your message. There are many ways to get your message out: social media, a blog, magazine articles, authoring/publishing a book, speaking, singing. and more.  How you share is important, but also here are some issues common to all of these.

  1. Who shares your message? Identify, in contemporary language, who is your tribe? Who also owns the same message? This “tribe” defines others you know that share your burden and message. This identifies your tribe and may exist within your current church, a viral church, your network of churches, or you may need to create your own “Church”. One major pastor shared with me as I left for a new job: “Stay with the vision God gives you, even if it costs your your life. Join a church that affirms that vision. If  you cant find it,, build it yourself with others that share it. As an example, back in the eighties Dr. Joe Aldrich began sounding a message that he wanted to see one city or region anywhere totally transformed by the Power of the Holy Spirit. By the early nineties, George Otis, Jr. had identified a dozen cities in the world where that was already happening.  His Sentinel group published the video story of four of these cities on  a DVD. Last time I talked with Otis, he had identified some 250 cities or regions worldwide, with fires started in some 500 more as this grows. This didn’t make your local newspaper, did it? In my own city. Dr. Joe identified those pastors who wished to see this locally and called them to prayer. We had a database of 1800 churches in our four-county area. In the Christian language, you define the harvest force.
  2. Define your audience very specifically. The “audience” defines those whom God wishes to hear your specific message. To use the Internet, which is very inexpensive, you need to aim at a very specific audience. This is very different from traditional advertising, which casts its net to a very broad audience to get a few people within it taking action. Your audience should be a group of people you are naturally called to. In the Christian language, this is your harvest field.
  3. Define your message. What is your specific message to your audience? What is your burden and passion? In Chapter 1 of Nehemiah, what was Nehemiah’s burden and passion? It was not building a wall. This wall isn’t even mentioned in the first chapter. For example, it might be “Restore America” or “Transformation of America” as the message. Your message should be one that your audience can understand and relate to their heart -need.
  4. Add value to the vision of your audience. For this you need to know the need of your audience. This is heart question. What is the heart of your audience? Now you need to communicate your message in terms of the heart need. With Nehemiah, the heart need was security. Jerusalem, or what was left of it was destroyed and they were surrounded by enemies. Nehemiah was going to address that by building the wall. Their real need was a unity and oneness and spiritual recovery.  He spoke to that by leading them in building the wall. The wall was the vehicle for the real need. Some years ago in Portland we had discovered using powerful mapping tools a Hispanic community without a church and needing one. Their want was ESL classes to learn English so they could get jobs. We started by addressing their need. We can confuse needs and wants if we are not careful. Define each for your audience, then add value.
  5. Define the warfare. What is keeping you from carrying your message forward? Finances? time? education? health? depression? Define your counter strategies for each. If the Lord wants you to deliver this message, He will provide a way if you commit. You’re the “postman”. Your job is to deliver the mail, not fight the dogs.
  6. Go personal. When younger I, like others, kept a journal (still do). I’d  get upset if anyone read it.  Now I journal on Facebook. So does a lot of my tribe. And I want you to read it. The personal posts that I do get read  the most, and are also shared the most.  If you want your posts to go viral, getting your readers to share you is essential. Don’t use Truth to beat others. Build relationships in trust and love.
  7. Evaluate. Make sure you have some type of feedback system to measure your on-going success.

Dealing with Stress

creative commons + stress

In 1992 I was under an incredible amount of stress after three years of major spiritual warfare. In 1989 I was hit with GBS during a mission trip to England. I was paralyzed me from the shoulders down. On returning home, the doctors told me there was major damage to the neural system from this GBS. The two longest nerves in my body from the hip to each foot were gone, among others, and could only grow about an inch a year. I would need two wheelchairs for the rest of my life. I didn’t see their prognosis as theologically correct. A little over a year later was walking again with no wheelchairs or crutches.

As I began to walk again, my wife was diagnosed with leukemia (AML) in April of 1991. I walked with her through multiple chemos and a bone marrow transplant. The transplant was successful; but back home in Portland the local doctors made three mistakes and I lost her.

As I looked very high personal stress level then, I discovered T.H. Homes and Richard Rahe at the University of Washington had done some major research on stress as it related to disease. You can take a simple test and identify the stress issues in your life, look at your score, and from that you can determine the probability you will me hit with a major illness within a year. The research has been updated since their original 1967 research, but you can take the test yourself and see your score at:

Stress Test and Scoring

There are several web sites that expand the research if you wish more information. You will see, however, that the death of a spouse, divorce, or death of a child all score the highest and almost assure you are set up for serious issues yourself. This was August of 1992. My score at the time over 300. I was set up for serious problems!

During the next year I kept very close watch on potential stress issues as well as staying close with high-level mentors. By May of the next year (1993), my friend and mentor Bob Waymire was asking me to travel with him to visit a Christian research center in London and do a teaching there. This was where previously I got hit with the GBS in 1999. I did a “Gideon” here and asked the Lord for signs. God gave me 11. I consulted multiple mentors. They all said “Go”. Fear, they said, was not a reason to turn Bob down. My pastor even made a decision to go with me after a prophet told me not to go alone.

A month before leaving I came down with shingles. I called Bob to let him know the trip was off. I was down with shingles. Bob said nonsense. He was on a lunch break with a board meeting that included some other Christian leaders. They would pray at 1 p.m, and that would fix that. By 5 p.m. that day the shingles was gone and I let Bob know the trip was back on. On Monday I checked again with my doctor. He verified the shingles was now gone but I needed to kick the immune system up for the trip and gave me a very high-powered antibiotic.

The trip was great, and my pastor was with me. Peter Batchelder is gifted with a very strong intercessory prayer gift. (Thank you Peter.) At one point while there, Peter told me a man from Germany had driven all night to join us and wanted some time with me. We decided to spend some time with him at a nearby coffeehouse. He asked me one question: “If I could tell him the single most important thing in spiritually mapping an area what would it be?”

I looked him straight in the eyes. “Prayer.” I said. “Spiritually mapping an area is highly strategic. The enemy will do everything possible to discourage to shut you down. Make sure you are covered with prayer constantly. If you don’t believe it, look at the book of Nehemiah. Read it, mark each time he prayed, and see what he was asking each time.”

Breaking Free of Our Chains

sadie_beforeA friend at the beach last weekend with her mother sent me a picture of her dog on the beach. I blew the picture up and noticed an interesting dichotomy. Here is a dog ready to run. Notice the awareness of the dog as she ponders what she sees. She is ready to move, to lead. Only one problem – there is a chain around her neck. She seems oblivious of it, but it’s there.

sadie_afterI loaded the picture to Photoshop and with a few simple edits removed the chain. Wow! Look at the difference now. My friend blew it up on her home computer when she got home – no trace of the chains. How does the new picture affect you emotionally? (You can blow the bottom pic up with a click.)

My friend loved it.

Wanna know something?” I said. “It’s a lot easier to remove chains on a dog with Photoshop that it is to remove chains from the people I know so they can be released to the mythic calling God gives them. ”

“They that know their God shall be strong and do exploits.”
Daniel 11:32

There’s a friend at my church that consistently likes to speak into my life from what he sees as my own calling. It’s a prophetic calling. There’s a lady I know that does this. (That’s her dog.) Graham Cooke does it. John Eldredge does it. When your pastor steps to the pulpit on Sunday does he (or she) speak from this to you? This, to quote John Eldredge, is the failure of many churches today. They can’t break free of those chains. How about your church?

What is binding you and keeping you from stepping up and being really free?
