Excerpts 2nd book “Breaking Light: Healing of the Hearts”

FireDancer - A step of faith

Here are some excerpts from the second volume of the”Breaking Light” novel series by Carl. This second book of the series is not shipping yet, but continues in development with work often starting early the morning. Enjoy these excerpts Thanks to everyone who has helped me on this. Writing this story has been more fun than any book I’ve done. These excerpts have not passed the final edit.

Breaking Light – Birth of a Hero (Book1)

As America finds itself hurtling toward a major election in 2032, the country finds itself trapped in divisions, multiple demonic forces, and corruption. No white knight has emerged to bring unity in the election of the next President. Out of this rubble a small church deep in the Cascade wilderness of the The American Northwest leads the nation and plays a major role in destroying a network of dark forces to move a strong Christian leader to the new Presidency almost overnight. This  first book of this Breaking Light series, Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero, ends in November of 2032, as Mark Pearson celebrates with this wilderness church and others the win of the country’s Presidency.

This wilderness church, Sunodia, uses an online network of secure computers with church leaders across the world, called The Phoenix, to do most of their communications ministry. This Phoenix name refers both to their small core group as well as their larger electronic network of seriously committed churches. This network is calling the nation to repentance and the transformation of America.

Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality

“For the revelation [vision] awaits an appointed time ,it speaks [as to kindle a fire] of the end [the Karios moment]. Though it linger, wait for it.it will certainly come and will not delay.” Hab. 2:3

get beyond illusion
Look at the Nehemiah story.  Those guys doing the spiritual mapping of Jerusalem were reporting to Nehemiah that there was no vision, no passion, no security, no leadership and that those chosen people there were in disgrace. Is that a picture of America today? So here this one man goes in and turns that completely around in 52 days. Really? Remember this “one man” first spent four months in prayer and fasting. For what was Nehemiah praying? There is no wall mentioned in that first chapter of Nehemiah. He wasn’t praying for a wall. For what was he praying?

Carl’s book. Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality, speaks into this change. Take a look at the Table of Contents, then order your copy from Amazon.com.

The Promise of the Dream

What did the dream mean? It was the late eighties, and after church on Sunday someone approached me. There was a visitor there that Sunday, my friend said, and he wanted someone to help him with a dream he had and my friend wondered if I could interpret it for him. I said I would try.

The young man was a brilliant engineer working with ATI, a major company that makes video boards for computers. He was involved in designing their video board for the next generation of computers. His job was to shuttle back and forth each week between Microsoft in Seattle and Intel here in Portland working on the design for that video board.

“Carl,” he said, “I had this dream. In this dream I’m driving from Portland up to Seattle. As I approached the city, there was a dark, dark cloud hanging over Seattle. Then the dream shifted and the next week I’m driving down to Intel in Portland.  As I approached the city, however, there was no dark cloud over Portland. Only sunshine. What does that dream mean?”

“I think I know”, I said, “I think it is a prophecy, a promise. I would like to check this with someone first.”

A few days later I am sitting in the office of Terry Dirks. Those of you who lived in Portland then probably remember Terry. A real giant in the faith. Dr. Joe was the visionary. Terry was his right hand that made the vision happen. Terry was the one that started the International Prayer Initiative here that soon let to that that spiritual tornado that swept Portland in 1992 that led to some 30,000 decisions for the Lord.

Tornado –

As I sat in Terry’s office, I shared this engineer’s dream with him.

“What do you think it means?” I asked.

Terry looked at me and then began sharing in that wonderful way that was always pregnant with grace.

“Carl, I’ve heard that dream story over and over again from others. It is always the same. Except there is one difference in the story now from the earlier versions.”

“In the earlier versions of the story, there use to be a dark cloud over Portland. It is not there now in these dreams.”

About the same time, one of my former pastors traveled out to the Northwest to lead a conference east of Seattle. I went up to the conference to meet him. To be honest, he was one of the best pastors I have ever have had. I thought it strange he was here, as God had so blessed his church that he was in major demand as a speaker;  yet he almost always turned invitations down. He said was called as a shepherd to his church,  and that was really his job. If you wanted to know what was really going on in his church, intern there. And people did. Why was he doing this conference here in the Northwest?

At one point I took an associate pastor with him aside and asked him that very question. Why did Gordon Cosby from Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC come to the Northwest? The associate looked  at me and said three sentences that still burn in my mind.

“Gordon believes revival will break in America. He believes it will begin in the Northwest. He wants to be here when it happens.”

Gordon made two more trips to the Northwest and I was with him on all of them. Last I heard, he was retired.

I believe there is a promise there from God. He is going to do something in America, and He wants to begin in the Northwest. He wants us to be a part of it. He wants you to be a part of it. There’s a spiritual tornado coming if we are passionate enough to pray for that promise.

(Part II of this post coming VERY soon.)

Breaking the Spiral of Silence

The last project Chuck Colson was able to launch before he died was a movement now known as Breaking the Spiral of Silence. I was able to hear five speakers of the leadership conference to launch this as we listened to the conference DVD last Sunday. Wow!

Basically, speakers are sounding a challenge for individuals and the Church to stand up to its moral and spiritual imperative that was given America when it was founded. America, on the course it is on now, is committing suicide.

From the links on the project home page, you can find out more about the project and get the DVD (2 hours), find out more, or join the movement yourself, and the personal strategies they suggest.

Some of the quotes that impressed me:

“Not the agenda of the donkey, not the agenda of the elephant, but the agenda of the Lamb.”
Sam Rodriguez

“There is a battle going on right now for the soul of America.”
(continuing to describe that we need to build what he called a “Rolodex of courage [ous men and women]”.)
Father John Morris

“The greatest evil today is not some radical movement…, but the greatest evil today is the weak, dead, feckless church.”
“You are the light of the world. There is no Plan B.”

Todd Wagner

Colson is not on the DVD and died last April, but Chuck was also responsible for starting the Manhattan Declaration project, another leadership initiative.

Signs of Hope: Habakkuk’s Questions, God’s Answers

An audio version of the full speech is available (mp3, approx 45+ minutes):

Signs of Hope

Carl Townsend spoke adult Singles at Rolling Hills Community Church September 18 at 10:45 A.M. on Signs of Hope: Leadership in an Age of Chaos. Carl looked at Habakkuk and what he saw and the burden that drove him to prayer. Carl then looked at where the Church is today and the responsibility of the Church when the vision Habakkuk saw is much the same one we see today. And this was supposed to be a chosen nation!

In reading that first chapter, the Northern Kingdom was already gone and the Southern Kingdom was about to be taken away by the Babylonians. The issue was not the Babylonians. The issue was that the Southern Kingdom was already destroyed, and from within.

The historian Arnold Toynbee has pointed out of the twenty-two civilizations that have appeared in history, nineteen of them collapsed when they reached the moral state the United States is in now.

Another version of his same quote:

Out of the 21 civilizations he studied that collapsed, 19 died from within, not by conquests from without. He tells us that there were no bands playing or flags waving when these civilizations decayed. It happened slowly in the quiet and the dark when no one was aware of what was happening.

What did God want Habakkuk to write on the billboard?

The Just Shall live by faith. (verse 4)

What is the billboard today?

What is the promise in the last verse of the book?

Signs of Hope

Signs of Hope – The Imago Dei Community Church in Portland

Whereas church growth leaders are telling us the (institutional) church is dying, here is a church in the Portland area that challenges that. Moreover, the church is attracting and extremely popular with young people. Here is an interview with Kevin Palau of the Palau Evangelistic Association with Rick McKinley, pastor of the Imago Dei Community church:

There is a Part II on YouTube and more stuff from Rick.
The Church is not dying, nor has its mission changed. The Gospel is needed now more than ever. Young people today will serve and are serving in a world very different from the world I knew as I grew up. What do you think this means for a Church today?

Signs of Hope – 4

A few weeks ago I lunched with a nurse (RN) at Sweet Tomatoes. This took most of the afternoon; but it was a delightful lunch and we could return to the buffet table again and again as we munched out way through the afternoon. She shared with me a project with which she was involved. In just a few days, they would open the Colosseum in Portland for one day to people in the city who were poor, had little income, and had medical needs. Medical professionals from the city’s churches – doctors. dentists, nurses – all planned to donate their time that day to work to help these people with their needs. Someone (she didn’t know who) had donated the money to rent the facility for the day and the massive work needed to set up for the day (she was also involved in the setup). The project requires generators, medical equipment, and lots or preparation in which she was already involved. She was very excited about the community and networking that was birthed out of this Church in a community sense meeting the needs of the people.

Servant LeadershipMoreover, this was being done four times a year, each time at a different place in the city. Later this Fall she’s involved with them again with a similar even in the Southeast part of the city. Next Sunday I mentioned it to my pastor on the west side of the city, only to discover a similar event was scheduled for October 1 on the west side. It was all over the city, and not just medical needs, but also housing and human trafficking issues (prostitution, sexual exploitation). The organization is Compassion Connect, the web site is at http://compassionconnect.com/. Here on the west site of the city we have Compassion Beaverton.

Is this being done in other cities? Where?
