Restoring America -Carl Townsend

John Eldredge

Restoring America

Founding Fathers

I want to see American restored. Like Nehemiah, I share a deep pain for my country (America) that has lost its way – no visioon, no passion, no leadership, no freedom, and no security. It hurts. There is a deep, deep burden there to see the America again for which those early forefathers bought with, sometimes, their lives.

In this lostness I see two churches. One is a church that tries to adapt to a dying culture and paradigm. This church, as in Germany before World War II, is experiencing a slow death in America. The members hardly recognize their dying and they continue to do what they’ve always done as the nation continues to fall, trying to adept to a failing culture. This is the cultural church.

The other is the confessional church. This Church sees there is a war, a spiritual war. They move to the front line, risking everything. Like Nehemiah, they take on the burden, the pain. We see Nehemiah praying and fasting for 40 days, asking God to forgive him and the nation. In World War II Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a part of this Church.

So I asked God what this meant for me.

I felt led to begin a multi-book Christian fictional novel that shows a path to national rebirth.

The story follows the strategies identified by George Otis (see his Informed Intercession: Transforming Your Community Through Spiritual Mapping and Strategic Prayer) where Otis found total transformation (spiritual, political, economic, healing, agricultural) had already started in certain cities and regions. The key components that were always there in each story included persevering leadership, fervent, united prayer, and often power encounters, diagnostic research and spiritual mapping. The basic problem today lies not with a particular person or political party, but rather is spiritual. There is a real war going on, and God calls you to be a part of it.

I started by defining some aspects of this story in the novel. In the first book of the series, the leadership is established.

The story is positive, uplifting, and exciting. You see hope and faith. The bad guys don’t stand a chance. God is in charge and this Church is committed to God’s authority.

  • The story has mystery, adventure, romance, risk, suspense.
  • It’s a heart story. Lots of hearts, romance, and love.
  • It is a VERY positive story full of hope and faith. The bad guys are out of the WH and Congress by the end of the first book. From that there is a lot of healing to do.
  • The conflict is real. We almost lose our protagonists at times. The actions of the bad guys, however, don’t dominate the story line. The story is driven from the characters and their relationships.
  • The story is biblically-based.
  • The plot line and story is believable. It is built from the stories of what God has done in my life and the lives of others. Sure, there are miracles, but no magic hat tricks.
  • Lots of music. Music is one of the only activities that activates, stimulates, and uses the entire brain. Book 2, in particular, has even more than Book 1. Dancers as well. It is no accident that Psalms is the longest book in the Bible.
  • There is overt and some direct evangelism in the story.
  • The story is highly mythic. The story begins with a lone young man striking out on a desolate wilderness trail to find a spiritual community he has heard about. The wilderness is not only physical, but also emotional and spiritual. In the second chapter there is a mist, a river, and more. All are mythic symbols. At the beginning our young man is frustrated, unable to change anything from his cultural church. In the second chapter he is frustrated, lost in a mist (another symbol), and has fallen on the ground and lying in the trail. He can hear the river (another symbol) and struggles to find the water he needs. It is at this point he meets the confessional Church.

You see all of these in Book 1. An early copy of my first chapter is online and free here. (The map in the chapter can be blown up on the PC using Shift-Ctrl buttons on the keyboard & mouse), the entire book is at Amazon.com. I’m working on Book 2 now. It is really fun.

Here is Carl’s book on the Nehemiah story:

Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality – $18.86 by Carl Townsend (PB) (Non-fiction)
Carl in this book tells the story of Nehemiah. The nation was without vision, passion, or security.. Sounds like America today! He turned the nation completely around in 52 days. At the same time he faced internal and external warfare.

 What”s Next?

Carl is hard at work on Book 2 in the Breaking Light series. The working title is Breaking Light: The Healing of the Hearts. Don’t expect a lot of political games as the new President begins his term. He is far, far more interested in seeing healing and being a catalyst for healing. Lots more music. The President is shifting leadership to the people and making the government smaller and less visible. Also you will discover the back story of the first book made visible in Book 2.

In the movie The Man from Snowy River, Jim Craig (Tom Burlinson) makes that incredible ride over the cliff. Tom did the stunt himself (as well as the other stunts in the movie), without having ridden horses much before. In the movie, the rugged ranch-hands and mountain men are chasing the brumbies, to which Harrison’s prize stallion has escaped. A brumby is an Australia term for a wild, free-roaming horse, especially  one descended from runway stock.

You watch as the experienced mountain men  chase the brumbies all over the mountain using a wild, but  objective strategy (“Go at them from the jump,” Harrison has told them.). Finally you watch these mountain men stop abruptly at the top of a cliff as the brumbies go over the cliff almost straight down to a deep valley below. The mountain men stare helplessly at the brumbies far below with no way to reach them. Then they hear the hoof-beats of a horse at full-speed gallop behind them. Parting, they see Jim and his horse continuing at full gallop through them and over the cliff. There is the determined look of authority and faith in his face as he takes the risk.

What you see next is Jim (Tom Burlinson) taking the horse (Denny) straight down the face of the cliff at full gallop in a single, long movie take. I watched this in a theater and my stomach went to my throat.

Just like Jim and those horses, God is also wild. Look at your Bible and the stories there. Sarah was 90 when she bore the child of promise. Moses was 80 when he led a nation to freedom with a series of miracles. There was David and Goliath, Daniel and the Lion’s Den, a virgin that gave birth, and a man that rose from the dead. Pretty wild stories. There is no limit on what God can do.

God created you in His image. That means you are wild. In what way do you see you see yourself as free roaming and wild? Just like that horse Jim was on. We are supposed, however, to run under  the control of our Creator – God. In this analogy, you are the wild stallion and God holds the reins. The problem, to quote C.S. Lewis, is that most men see themselves as geldings, emasculated, and (as the gelding), unable to birth anything.  Yet Christ told us we can do everything He was doing and more in His name. This binding we tend to live under is an illusion from Satan himself. In what way do you see yourself in this war for your heart today?

Stand up, speak out, and act to protect your freedoms. My novel (which you can order from Amazon below) shows how a small church, with God’s help, can turn the nation around.

Freedom in Christ

frredom
Some years ago a prison is Argentina was experiencing a massive revival, with many of the prisoners there coming to the Lord. This wasn’t a normal prison. This prison contained some  of the worst of the worst in Argentina – the worst of the murderers, rapists, and such. I knew a pastor friend who decided to go down to visit the prison with a group of pastors. As they entered the prison, one of the men came up and shook his hand with a classic greeting from the prisoner I still remember, “I’m not in prison, you are.”

True freedom can only be given by Christ.

If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed John 8:36 NKJV

It is through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ that we gain true freedom. It isn’t just a behavioral change, this is an identity change.

Remember that the enemy, The Thief, wants to steal this freedom from you. Any movement toward freedom and life, any movement toward God or others, will be opposed. Marriage, beauty, rest – the Thief wants it all. So, it becomes the devil’s business to keep the Christian’s spirit imprisoned. He knows that as the believing and justified, the Christian has been raised up out of the grave of his sins and trespasses. From that point on, Satan works that much harder to keep us bound and gagged, actually imprisoned in our own grave clothes. He knows that if we continue in this kind of bondage. . . we are not much better off than when we were spiritually dead. (A.W. Tozer, edited)

In America today, someone is trying to steal your freedom.

  • Last November, during the elections, leading IRS agents tried to hassle the Portland pastors and their lawyers in an effort to scare and intimate the local churches. They were trying to control the pastor’s messages going into our election.
  • In Missouri, the federal government is trying to force pastors to get permits if they wish to baptize in creeks.
  • In the public schools now, the government is force-feeding a science of lies and an American history of lies to your children.
  • In the summer of 2012, the Administration denied permission for the churches to celebrate in a local park. They had been doing it there for years.

All of these are denial of our freedoms, a violation of the Constitution, and illegal.

The real culprit is Satan himself, trying to hold you bondage to your old self. That self is a corpse. Why bind yourself to a corpse? Live free in Christ!!!

I Have a Dream – more

dreamMore on King and that famous speech fifty years ago this week. That speech was more profound than most of us realize. It wasn’t “just” about the blacks and their freedom. Look at the first sentence.

“I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration of freedom in the history of our nation”.

That speech was about freedom – your freedom, my freedom. Something those founding fathers fought and died for. Something we all have lost in America. I enjoyed reading in TIME the response of Malala Yousafzn to King’s speech. She was the young Pakistani activist that was shot because of her support for women’s education.

“I, too, have a dream. My dream is to see every child with a book and pencil. I dream that every woman in the world will be treated with dignity and equality.”

What is your dream? What is your passion? Your burden?
I will tell you my dream.

  • I dream that my pastor can speak God’s word to us from the pulpit with having the IRS goonies breathing down his back, as they did last November going into that election ( and as those goonies did with many other pastors in Portland).
  • I dream of public parks that are open and the freedom to assemble in them instead of closing them, as the federal government did to a nearby park in Vancouver a year ago when the churches wanted to assemble there (as they had been doing year after year.)
  • I dream that public school teachers can read to the kids again from the Bible. A right guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. (see http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/08/25/justice-department-tries-to-block-louisiana-school-voucher-program/?test=latestnews)
  • I dream that those we elect to represent us in Washington will read and honor the Constitution, as they swear to do when beginning to represent us and as they are called the Constitution to do, which they no longer honor now.
  • I dream that Americans will become more intelligent and elect people that support freedom instead of the ones there now who, for the most part, are binding us to immoral actions and destroying the Constitution or either they are acting as geldings, devoid of any ability to lead.
  • I dream of being a part of a business that has the freedom to choose who they hire based on the core values and talents of their employees.
  • I dream of leaders in our country that we can follow instead of greedy politicians that manipulate the country’s agenda and murder babies with your tax money and set up death panels for the elderly and call it “health care”.
  • I dream of an economic and political system where half your income no longer goes to a government that doesn’t work and tries to behavioral control the citizens.
  • I dream of a government that doesn’t throw our hard-earned tax money to Islamic radicals that have no consciousness of American values.
  • I dream of an America where the leaders believe the family is the most important institution in America and chooses to support the family and family core values (see 1 Corinthians 6.9-10).

What is your dream, your burden? Are you acting on that today?
Please forgive us God, for throwing away what those early founders fought and died for. Help us, again, to stand up and fight for those.

The Fall of a Great Nation?

Many people refer to America as a democracy, perhaps the greatest democracy on earth. This is really not correct, as America is not an absolute democracy. America is really a constitutional republic.

An absolute democracy is a political system in which the majority enjoy absolute power through the use of democratic elections. Without the restraint of a constitution, the majority can vote to impose whatever they wish with minority opposition. In other words, the majority can vote to elect those who can deny the minority their God-given rights. Our founding fathers recognized the danger of this and chose the constitutional republic alternative. Thomas Jefferson referred to absolute democracy as elected despotism. The founding fathers did not fight for any absolute democracy government. They fought for a constitutional republic.

America a Democracy?

Constitutional Covention

A constitutional republic, in contrast, is a political system in which the head of state and other officials are elected by the people as representatives of the people. A reference system, or constitution, is written that establishes the absolutes against which decisions are made. Three branches of government are set up: executive, legislative, and judicial. These, in turn, work together to hold all three accountable to the constitution. The constitution, it turn, is written referencing some type of absolute standard. In America this was the Bible. It doesn’t mean all the founding fathers were Christians, it simply means the constitution was written to use the Bible as the reference standard. In Egypt, their constitution at the current time was written using the Sha’aria as a reference.

The founding fathers wisely used the constitutionally divided powers of the government to limit elected officials from imposing their tyranny on the people.

Unfortunately, today the elected officials have successfully manipulated those that elected them to create enough dependency for them to hold on-going power through democratically held elections. We have reached a point where almost every American is slave to the government.

We are currently living through the paramount form of elected despotism that our founders so presciently sought to forestall. At some point during the progressive era of the early 1900?s, elected officials began to deviate from the constitution in a dramatic fashion. At present, we find all of our founding principles under assault. Many prominent political leaders in both parties seek to destroy our free markets, infringe upon our personal liberties, and abrogate our social values. Unfortunately, they have accrued a high level of success. Moreover, they have prosecuted this revolution without firing a shot. Instead, they have used the soft edge of the sword of elected despotism.
Daniel Horowitz

In addition, many political leaders who say they are abiding by the Constitution and misinterpreting the Tenth Amendment to promote tyranny on a state level as well as the Federal level. This is particularly true of the blue states.

Pure democracy cannot subsist long nor be carried far into the departments of state. – it is subject to caprice and the madness of popular rage.
John Witherspoon

Article 4 section 4 of our Constitution guarantees each state a Republican form of government.

It is incumbent upon each of us to restore our Constitution as the supreme law of the land and that our God-give rights in the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, and not revoked. This involves particularly some courageous stands on the part of the churches , economic systems, and our education institutions particularly. In my church we spend a LOT of time teaching both kids and adults what you read here and what our founding fathers really did.

Toynbee, the famous historian, pointed out that 19 out of 21 civilization have died from within. They died not by conquests from without, but from within. He tells us that there were no bands playing or flags waving when these civilizations decayed. It happened slowly in the quiet and the dark when no one was aware of what was happening. In America this could happen within your generation.

What is God asking you to do about this?

Tribute to Ronald Reagan

This is a short video ( ~5 minutes) that we all should watch, appreciate

and fully understand its meaning. It is also one that everyone in

our government should be encouraged to watch

several times, at least until they get it!!!

If you are one of those that do not forward e-mails, please make

this an exception and pass this along .

Ronald Reagan’s church put this together to commemorate the birthday of Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately the war against the evil of liberalism is still alive and well, and we fight it even at Bel Air Presbyterian. The liberal Presbyterians are doing all they can to pervert the church from the inside out. Fortunately the conservative Christians are strong at Bel Air. Ronald Reagan loved Bel Air Presbyterian as I do…Enjoy!

Confessions and Commitment for the New Year

Face Time with the Boss

Face Time with the Boss

I like a comment (and probably the vision statement) of Bethel Church in Redding, CA as quoted by Jack Taylor:

“Let’s seek the Kingdom, find it, declare what we’ve found, and give it away!”
from When Heaven Invades Earth: A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles by Bill Johnson

“We have been given life, but we have not lived. We have been called to freedom, but we have found the burden heavy, the anxiety painful, and have returned to our illusions about life, and our deceits about ourselves. Let us, therefore, acknowledge our continued denial of life and our need for that Power which is beyond our reach, yet every present to us.

Knowing that life is given to us only in the present, we desperately cling to our false images about the past and our imagined fantasies concerning the future. Knowing that we are received in being, we have not chosen to be. Knowing that we are mission, we have not elected to be called. O Lord, have mercy upon us.

We are valued as we are. Life is good as it is given. The future is open. And this is the one objective and everlasting truth – in Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven. – may we receive this gift and live.

Let us now move into His world as servant people, servants of His Word and servants in His world. May He grant us the grace to hear what we are called to be and do.”
(from a liturgy of a coffeehouse church in Washington, DC)

Vanderbilt University Boots a Christian Group

Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt Medical School Entrance - author: Dansan4444

Vanderbilt University has been getting a LOT of bad publicity lately on their decision to shut down a Christian small group of students that has been meeting on the campus. Citing a “separation of church and state” as the reason (the college is not even a government school), The university is illegally violating the principle of free speech that is part of the foundation of our Constitution.

I had a chance this weekend to talk with two of the medical students from Vanderblit, one of which was home for the holidays in Portland. The group has continued to meet and now meets off-campus. This is extremely bad publicity for the University. Poor educational leadersh8ip for the students.

At the same time in Washington our Dorky president is using your tax dollars to rebuild mosques in the Middle East and sending 20 F-16 military jets to Egypt, who has a Constitution based on the Shariah.

This post is not copyrighted – share it as you will on Facebook, Twitter, or your own blog and website. Write the University. Also let your Congressional representatives know about this and the other dorky stuff going on in Congress and by the President. Impeach, fire, and jail if they can’t follow the Constitution.

Elections, IRS,and the Church

church, IRS, and elections

A lot of churches were confused going into the election in November as to what they could and couldn’t do. Here is an overview of the rules for this prepared for me by a leading lawyer in Portland on this issue. It is really a guest editorial. Please share it with your friends and church pastors and elders.

  1. The Johnson Amendment was passed by Congress in 1954 in an effort to limit tax exempt organizations’ ability to speak out about candidates, and it has been misinterpreted by churches to limit the church from speaking out about issues;
  2. There are certain anti-religious groups who threaten churches in writing with complaints to the IRS if they speak out about anything they characterize as “political”;
  3. The threat from loss of tax exemption is token at best. Only one church has ever lost tax exempt status for speaking out about a candidate, and even the IRS noted in court that the loss was temporary;
  4. Several Oregon churches investigated by the IRS for involvement in political campaigns for simply making voter guides available received written advisories acknowledging “they had done nothing wrong”, but admonishing them “not to do it again”- a clear acknowledgement by the IRS it couldn’t prove its case;
  5. Efforts to challenge the Johnson Amendment have been growing in recent years, with over 1600 pastors and churches participating in “Pulpit Freedom Sunday” on October 7, 2012 by preaching on the upcoming elections and sending copies of their sermons to the IRS. Many more churches participated informally. The IRS has taken no action against any of them and further advised it wouldn’t do so;
  6. The reasons the IRS won’t challenge these churches are: (1) it is afraid the Johnson Amendment will be declared unconstitutional if a challenge is brought; and (2) the IRS is aware the groundswell of churches participating in Pulpit Freedom Sunday and other efforts is attributable to national networks of Christian public interest lawyers raising awareness among pastors and churches and the promise to litigate the matter at no charge on behalf of churches who may be subjected to enforcement.
  7. The important thing is for pastors and churches actually to exercise the freedom they already have boldly before they lose freedom to speak out at all, and for their parishioners to back their leaders in such efforts.

The Wild Pigs – a Story About Freedom

CATCHING PIGS….
There was a chemistry professor in a large college that
had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class
was in the lab, the professor noticed one young man, an exchange
student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt. The
professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him
he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting
communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his
country’s government and install a new communist regime.

In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor
and asked a strange question. He asked: “Do you know how to catch
wild pigs?”
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the
punch line.

The young man said that it was no joke. “You catch wild
pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the
ground. The pigs find it and begin to come every day to
eat the free corn.

“When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence
down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they
get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up
another side of the fence. “They get used to that and start to eat
again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence
up with a gate in the last side.

“The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to
come through the gate to eat that free corn again. You then slam the gate
on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost
their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they
are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so
used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for
themselves, so they accept their captivity.”

The young man then told the professor that is exactly
what he sees happening in America. The government keeps pushing us
toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn
out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned
income, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant
crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. while we continually lose our
freedoms, just a little at a time.

One should always remember two truths: There is no such thing as a free
lunch, and you can never hire someone to provide a
service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.
If you see that all of this wonderful government “help”
is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you
might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is
essential to your way of life, then you will probably delete this email.
But, God help us all when the gate slams shut!

Quote for today:

“The problems we face today are there because the people
who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living.”
