Quotations from Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero (Book 1)

Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero - Creative Commons

Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero – Creative Commons

(Roger to Ken)
“In mythology, the Phoenix was a bird resembling an eagle that lived for 500 years and was periodically reborn. When it died, it rose again from its ashes more beautiful and more powerful. The Phoenix was subsequently adopted as a symbol in early Christianity. It can refer to the Church or an individual. The Phoenix is also used to refer to somebody or something beautiful or unique. There are leaders out there that define prophecy as calling forth the beauty of another person that God sees in that person; but that person may not be able to see that beauty in themselves until it is called out. Satan tries to keep us from seeing it. The reality is the person is unique in the eyes of God, created for a specific purpose even before they are born.”

(Melody to Ken)
“Now change the verse [Luke 4:18-22] and our mantra to reflect this Post-Resurrection state and put your name in there. This is the way John Eldredge puts it.”

“God has sent the Holy Spirit on a mission.
I have great news for you, Ken.
God has sent the Holy Spirit to restore and release something.
And that something is you, Ken.
The Holy Spirit is here to give you back your heart and set you free.”

(Tom to Ken)
“The biggest challenge for anyone on this earth is the rescue of the human heart. Starting with your own. No other creation has that passion. No other part of creation is created for and searches for that intimacy with God.”

The battle

(Tom to Ken)
“Ken”, Tom said, “The war is already launched. The question that haunts every man is where that battle is in his own life and the adventure to which that battle calls him.”

(Lorraine to Ken)
“Ken, I’ll tell you this about what you were researching today. I’ve lived here for many years and I don’t believe Frank Benson’s death was an accident. Don’t ask me to prove it or who is involved. I just know it wasn’t an accident.”

(Mrs. Benson to Ken)
“Ken, this area was once the center of the Cherokee Indian people group in America. Two centuries ago in 1838 legislation was signed that forced all the Cherokee Indians to move west of the Mississippi River into reservations. This was under Andrew Jackson’s Presidency, and some 15,000 Cherokees were forced to leave their home. About 4,000 Cherokees died on the march that eventually came to be known as the Trail of Tears.”
…Ken noticed that as she shared, it was as if a great pain and burden fell over her. The brilliant, twinkling eyes began to tear up. Then she quickly pulled herself together. For a brief moment Ken heard another voice. Beautiful. Then that voice was gone.
“I’m sorry,” she said.

Lorraine practically dragged him out of the library, down the steps to the mall, around the corner at the Edison Fountain and into the café. Back to that same table and she said, “Sit”.
“Look,” she said with her eyes flashing. “I believe God did something last night and we just don’t see it yet. God set us up. Something happened, we just don’t see it. There is an agenda in play. God’s agenda. Maybe it wasn’t the one we expected; but our job is to keep our eyes open and to do the best we can, praying for God to reveal His agenda. Remember those Israelites on the edge of their Promised Land? Only they could not see it. They missed the window of opportunity, or kairos moment God gave them and as a result were commanded to wait for the next generation to go in. Let’s pray on that now.”

“Another thing, Ken” Lorraine said, “You must learn to see with your heart. God is after your heart. Pray that God can help you to see with that heart.”

Finally, Don paused and gave a deep sigh. “Today, again, Crusaders must march to recover what was stolen from the Christians by the Muslims and others. This today, in many ways, is the First Crusade for us and the Church today. Those Crusaders made major mistakes at times. We must avoid those.”…
Lorraine asked a question. “What are we supposed to take back?”
Don turned to her. “The political system, the educational system, the health system, the judicial system, the financial system, the family, even the church as an institution2. They have all been stolen from us. Who do you see as a Crusader today?”

“I’ve got my purse. Tom, can I call Ginger and let her know we are all right?”
“No, Lorraine. None of us can call or contact anyone. When the news does get out about the car crashes, there will be people who care about you that will think you are dead. There will be obituaries in the newspapers and on television and the Internet, along with memorial services for you. And there’s not a thing you can do about it. Anyone you even try to contact will become a target. You will have to put aside, for now, any normal emotional response you may have about that. The only advantage we have right now is that the people who are trying to kill us probably think we’re dead and will quit, for the moment, chasing us. There is a consolation. The Church in Sunodia and Seattle is praying for us. They won’t stop.

Lorraine started their conversation.
“This is getting far more than scary.”
“Lorraine,” Tom said, “we can’t go back now. I think God is going to act, real soon, in ways we can’t possibly imagine. I think we’re going to see something big.”
“Like parting the Red Sea?” joked Ken.
Tom jumped in, “Careful, Ken, God may do just that, or at least something that looks like that to us.”

“And you are going to change this?”
“Nope. God will do it. He’s going to use the Holy Spirit to enable us to restore this nation.”
“God help you, Tom.”
“I sure hope so. Will you help us?”

(Speech by Mark Pearson, incoming American Presidential nominee)
“We each have our dreams. Yet, for each of us, the temptress calls, like the singing siren, and lulls us from taking any conscious action. We tend to avoid the pain of rejection, doubt, and disappointment and have numbed ourselves from the epic story of a life fully lived to which God calls us. To sleep through your dreams is to choose a life of restless nights and unfulfilled passions. I applaud the work of this small group that now challenges every one of us and yes, even the sleeping church. God’s invitation to each of us is to seize the divine, or kairosmoments, that are found in the needs of other people’s lives and to speak that moment into them, to encourage them to take hold of their own epic story, even as you take hold of your own moment.”1

(From a speech to the Phoenix group by Mark, incoming US Presidential nominee, quoting a former Czech Premier)
”The danger to America is not President Mike Henderson [former President], but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of a Henderson presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Henderson, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Mike was just a willing puppet with a personal agenda. He knows nothing of how America has been forged or what patriotism is. Nothing. Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Mike Henderson, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who elected him as President.2

Ferguson and the Church

South Africa The Good News

“Resentment is like drinking poison and then hope it will kill your enemies.” Nelson Mandela.

Like many others in America, I weep as I see the effect of what happened and is happening in Ferguson and other violence (as sexual assaults on the campuses) issues as they sweep across the nation and the riots emerge in one city after another, including my own city of Portland Oregon. I don’t expect it to go away any time soon, as the basic causes till remain. I share a deep burden and pain for what is going in in America. There are many causes, but one of these is very important. There is a movement going on in our culture toward something call modernism, liberalism – it has many names. In this you define your own rules for your world view. There are no absolutes. The problem this is that their are, indeed, some absolutes. When someone tells me there are no absolutes, I tell them they have just contradicted themselves by making an absolute statement.  There are absolutes (see Amos 7:1ff). When America was founded, the wise men who led the nation then established the Constitution as our reference for legal and political decisions. The Constitution, in turn, was built on the Bible and philosophical principles birthed by the Protestant Reformation. When we refer to America as a Christian nation, it doesn’t mean we are Christians. We are saying we are built on the Judea-Christian principles. If you don’t like those rules, move somewhere else. A law court here, for example, will not judge by the Sharia. If you can’t honor out system, move to a country that honors what you want. Don’t try to change us. Obama, for example, has been a disaster as a President. He tries  to lead from his twisted Muslim faith and a narcissistic mentality among other things. He’s tried to throw out our Constitution (which he says is not valid anymore) and lead as a emperor or king from his own laws, even though on his inauguration he swore to uphold the Constitution. Congress, in refusing to hold him accountable, has also failed and running on their own laws, which vary among the leadership there. They have left the Constitution, which they swore to uphold as well. Then the police leave the rules of law. After awhile the people say they can do that, too, and they become ungovernable, as at Ferguson – with riots now at at lease a dozen cities. When this begins to happen, you no longer have a republican government. You have anarchy. There are many posts circulating on the Internet that Ferguson could be TIME’s “Man of the Year”. Makes sense. (It did get the #2 slot.) At a conference a few years ago with George Barna of Barna Research, He told us that in five years we would have either anarchy or revival. Looks like America has chosen anarchy. What does mean for me as a Christian and the Church? At the root of all this we are basically looking at a spiritual warfare. The enemy (Satan) is after the very hearts of men – your  heart. The anger, resentment, depression, hate – all of it – is part of the attack from the enemy. From what I see, most Christians don’t even know there is a war going on. In addition they don’t seem to know God calls them to be a part of the warfare. We enjoy our coffee-time before Sunday School, contemporary music, and non-threatening messages. Jesus was not meek and mild. He threw out the money-changers in the temple just days before his arrest and death. Do you know why? The temple was so busy with the money-changers and their corruption of what God was trying to do that the people who needed to be healed could not get in. The kids saw what Jesus was really trying to do and celebrated, praising God. Jesus led from a righteous indignation  and upset “what is. ” Where is the Church today?

Ed Silvoso, spiritual warfare

Ed Silvoso, Creative Commons

“The Church in the West today presents too easy a target for Satan.  We do not believe we are at war.  We do not know where the battleground is located, and, in spite of our weapons, they are neither loaded nor aimed at the right target.  We are unaware of how vulnerable we are.” Ed Silvoso

Barna also said at the conference that of the churches he has worked with, over 90% had no strategic and objective mission statement. As I began authoring my Breaking Light book series, I asked myself what would the Church look like here? You see the young protagonist striking out to find his manhood in this world of confusion. Can he find a Church that can call him out as warrior, hero, and leader in this culture? The Church that God leads him to is called The Phoenix  in the book doesn’t even have a mission statement. They have a mantra found in Luke 4:18-24. Then they send him out with a very bold assignment. They soon find themselves way over their heads with their lives at stake. Big adventure!! What Happened to the American Church?

George Barna

George Barna (Creative Commons)

A few years ago I attended a conference in which the following quote was made by George Barna(1):

I’ve concluded that within the next five years America will experience one of two outcomes: either massive spiritual revival or total moral anarchy.

Looks like Americans have chosen the anarchy route and we are right on course for seeing his prophecy become reality. Where is the Church in this? To quote Leonard Ravenhill “If Jesus preached the same message that ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified.” I also like John Eldredge’s book, Waking the Dead.

After that Barna conference a few years ago, I wrote Beyond Illusion: Leading From Reality, a non-fiction account of how Nehemiah turned Israel around in 52 days. When Nehemiah started, Jerusalem was much as America is today: no leadership, no vision, no passion, no security, no financial resources. How did God use him to effect the transformation?(2) In writing that book, I went down and spend a few days with mentor Bob Waymire to understand better what Nehemiah did.

I wondered what would happen if a Christian took on that challenge today in America. The last few years, I redid the non-fiction Beyond Illusion book message as a new fictional story that takes place in 2032. Of course, it isn’t really 2032, but I needed to show the reader that this is really a spiritual war and in the present time.  In writing this “Book 1″ of this new Breaking Light series, I had a hard time keeping my protagonists alive. In Chapter 9 of this fiction story, there are three attempts on their lives. Yep, looked like they’d get crucified.I had to put the book down until God could help me figure out how to keep them alive. Incidentally, Nehemiah had the same problem staying alive.

That first book of the new series is out now. You can order both the Beyond Vision and Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero from Amazon.

The Journey to Authentic Manhood – Part 1

I firmly believe the biggest problem in the Church today is the lack of authentic manhood. Actually, you don’t see a lot of real manhood anywhere. (The same is true for the lack of authentic women.)

Aragorn - the warrior, authentic manhood

Aragorn – the warrior, authentic manhood (Creative Commons)

Why is that true? The dictionary definition of manhood is the quality (such as strength, courage) that expected in a man setting him up to live a life of truth, passion, and courage. The problem with this definition is what are the core values we measure these qualities against? The guy that sits in the White House today and most of the Congresspeople have a very different set of core values than I do. Moreover, many cultural forces bang on us through television, magazines, newspapers, and the Internet to try to force us to serve their own corrupt core values. There appears to be no common myth serving our culture, a statement I first heard from late Joseph Campbell, the foremost authority on myths. To quote Dr. Lewis, the writer of The Quest for Authentic Manhood course, the definition of manhood `now is “confusion”.

“Paralysis (masquerading as “confusion”) haunts every man when a looming decision will require a lot of us.”
John Eldredge

Dr. Lewis says that “there is no clear vision of manhood today that is compelling to a man”. Young people have few real men to look to. And the list of the ones they can bond with is even smaller, often zero.

Once I met a guy who embraced the new “do your own thing” without realizing the deep captivity he was embracing.  He once told me, “There are no absolutes today.” I smiled back at him, “The statement you just made is an absolute. You contradicted yourself.” He really could not understand how he had contradicted himself.

In my Breaking Light: Birth of a Hero, we see the protagonist at this transition to manhood in his own life. He’s on a wilderness trail, lost, and confused about everything in his life. His “church” back home has sold out to the culture and he is in a physical, emotional, and spiritual wilderness, confused. In Chapter 2 he will meet Church and be thrown into a battle, an adventure, and a pursuit that will change his life forever and could even cost him his life.

dourage and authentic manhood

From Aragorn’s speech at the Black Gate Creative commons

There must, of course, be an absolute reference point for your values. Otherwise there are no laws, no order, no purpose. That is close to where America is today. When the founding fathers wrote our Constitution, they used the Bible as their reference point. They even made provisions for changing it if we needed to change it. Now the President and Congress has thrown out the Constitution, and we can see already what that leads to.

The best example of authentic manhood, of course, is Christ himself. At the start of his ministry He gave His own mantra:

“’The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.’ Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’”
Luke 4:18–22 NKJV

Jesus also made it plain that this authority is also gifted by the Spirit to all those who make Jesus Lord.  Instead, today in America today the church has gone in retreat and is running in defense. It needs to look at Ephesians 6, put on the defensive components, and then take authority using those offensive components: prayer and the Word of God. We already have the authority in Christ and the power.

A Journey of the Heart

In Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers we first meet Théoden as a demented man, possessed and lost to reality. Gandalf leads in restoring him to reality and as King of Rohan. Now Théoden wants to relax, party, and enjoy life. Aragorn tells him that is not possible. War has been declared by the Evil One, and Théoden has no choice but to respond, fight, and save himself and his kingdom.

This is where the Church in America is today. Blinded by the Enemy, we don’t even see the war that has already been declared.  In addition, we don’t see that God has called you to have a crucial role in this war. It is a major battle, and the battle is for your heart. We are very much in danger of losing America today, and the Church has yet to step up to the battle. Our first task is the recovery of our heart, stolen by the Enemy.

“Paralysis (masquerading as “confusion”) haunts every man when a looming decision will require a lot of us.”
John Eldredge

As the story in Breaking Light opens, Ken has lost heart. He is in a wilderness: A physical wilderness, an emotional wilderness, and a spiritual wilderness. His first challenge is for the restoration of his heart.

Carl’s next booktitled Breaking Light: Birth of Hero, is now shipping from Amazon or available from him in person.. The book is Christian fiction story set in the year 2032. Then again, maybe I’m playing with the reader. The tagline, or what some would call the elevator clause, is: What happens when a small community of believers risks everything to change everything.

Really, writing this book has been a very wonderful and fun experience. The entire book has been authored now (and it looks like it may spill over to more books). One of the editors (whom I shall call my co-pilot), went very creative with me on her edits. I’m not complaining – she’s very, very brilliant and I love her ideas.

One interesting story will illustrate an issue I experienced. I actually started this book back in the seventies but stopped when it seemed the protagonist was doing a lot of running around but not getting the mission he had been given done. He was committed to the mission, it was just that everything he did seemed to lead to a dead end.  This went on for over three chapters. I was about ready to email another fiction author that had already helped me and asked her what she did in a case like that.Should I take those chapters out, or backtrack and rewrite?

The answer seemed to come from God without sending an email to anyone. If I was frustrated at how the story was going, think how frustrated my protagonist is. Moreover, think how often all of us are frustrated when God gives us a mission and we don’t see any way of even getting to the first base.

The solution was to identify my own frustration with the dead end path of the story and project it into the narrative through the feelings and actions of the protagonist. Poor Ken: depression, anxiety, anger, stress and you name it. In the book we see him sitting with Lorraine in a cafe; and Lorraine is trying to lead him out of this. Ken shares with Lorraine that he is lost as it relates to his mission. He has no “place”, he doesn’t see that God is doing anything. How many Christians do you know at a point in their life like that? Lorraine is telling him that God is working even they don’t see it. Think of the Israelites as they stood at the Promised Land. God wants Ken to see that place,  that Ken has place and God is working through him, even if he doesn’t see it. If he prays and asks God to show him where God is working God will show him because God wants Ken to see it. God will reveal it. They pray together asking God to show this to Ken.

I continued on with the book. Nothing seemed to be revealed to Lorraine, to Ken, or even to me – and I’m the writer! Several chapters later God showed me how everything fit together and led to an incredible experience in the narrative. God had been working and I hadn’t seen it in the story. I didn’t have to rewrite anything in those early three chapters. It was all there.

Now the interesting thing is that this fictional story played out in my own life in reality 2009 as I lunched with a lady. I was”Ken”, lost to place. We were eating in a restaurant. She spoke the very words Lorraine spoke to Ken in the book. This was the most powerful dialog I have ever had with anyone. In other words, this book really isn’t fiction or fantasy. All the stories in the book are true, I just shifted the time line to play a game with the reader.

Last week I prayed with the collected group of pastors in my church. They asked me how to pray for the book, and now I ask you to pray with me in this.

  • That God will be glorified in the story.
  • That Jesus will be lifted up in the story.
  • That the Holy Spirit will anoint the story.

I think it is pretty exciting as I talk with people about the weird characters. It’s a very revolutionary story.

Gravity – The Movie and Its Metaphor

The movie opens in local theaters October 4.

gravity movieThe Plot Intro

Medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is on her first space shuttle mission, accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), who is commanding his final expedition. During a spacewalk, debris from a satellite crashes into the space shuttle Explorer which mostly destroys it, leaving them stranded in space with limited air.

There are only two real actors in the movie: Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) who is a newbie in space and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), a veteran astronaut. Other cast members are only voiced. One review I read says to see this in 3-D even if you hate 3-D to get a full sense of the explosion and debris that is coming at the astronauts (and viewer), which adds to the story and your suspense.

The Metaphor

The film has a VERY powerful metaphor. Alfonso Cuaron was the writer-director, and in the October issue of Wired at the library and on-sale now tries to define the metaphor as he saw it. Here is my own version of the his metaphor.

Everything in the movie is a metaphor for the main character (Sandra Bullock). The character and background (the universe) are equally important – one informs the other. Bullock is caught between Earth (Place, Home) and the void of a universe. The debris in the movie that is coming at her is a metaphor for adversity, spiritual warfare. Bullock lives in her own bubble (spacesuit) and is trapped there. She has trouble communicating (there is no sound in space or the movie, only a music track). I think of the spacesuit as the institutional “church”, religion, and all of the traditional “bubble” that we live in that for many has become a prison. Within that, she has problems communicating. In the movie, she has to get out of the spacesuit because it is suffocating her. In the end, the basic story is about rebirth as a possible outcome of adversity.

I have a question at this point. I haven’t seen the movie and can’t answer it. Where is the Church, as the Body of Christ, in this? Is it here somewhere in the metaphor of the movie? I have an idea, but will wait until I see the movie. I think it will surprise most people if I am right.

The Actors

Both actors said their roles were extremely demanding and the director said it took five years to make the movie. Scientists and astronauts were interviewed to get the space shots and plot correct. A full animation of the movie was done so they could align the final shots against the CGI. Sandra said she kept her young son with her on set to keep her emotionally together, and much of her work was learning the detail choreography for her “dances” in space.

This was a new type of film for George Clooney as well. The director offered to use stunt actors to relieve Clooney of some of the difficult physical contortions. He refused, and wanted to do everything himself. The director found out later Clooney  was going home each evening physically destroyed. Eventually, the entire animation had to be redone to the story that you see in the film.

Graham Cooke on Prophecy

Graham Cookke - prophecyI’m just back from a three-day conference with Graham Cooke. We heard some of most profound spiritual messages I have heard in over a decade. Graham encouraged us to do Heaven a favor. Stop associating with your old identity. You’re talking to a corpse. How crazy is that? Your angels will thank you for remaining in Christ, you’re a new person in Christ. It’s not a behavior issue, it’s an identity issue. Simon became Peter, James & John became “Sons of Thunder”, Paul became Saul.

Hurts, wounds, rejection and emotional trauma are a part of our lives, both before and after salvation. Fortunately, we serve a God who is committed to our physical, emotional and mental healing. His goal is to bring us into the fullness of life in the Spirit.

The biggest thing I heard at the conference was that people are hungry for real spiritual depth, an infilling of the Holy Spirit. It was a sold-out conference of 600 of us coming from Alaska, Texas, and beyond. Some ladies I talked with are headed to California in a few days to catch Stasi and John Eldredge’s Advanced Captivating conference. Like spiritual hippies, people are trying to find what I called Bethel points – places where Heaven is invading earth. This was certainly one of them.

(The disk set of the conference is available for about $30 from http://www.brilliantbookhouse.com in a few days. Ask for the Portland conference disk set.More details here soon.)

What is a Prophet?

There are multiple verses in the Bible supporting this profound concept of prophecy- 1 Peter 4:11, Joel 2:28, Numbers 11:29, 1 Corinthians 14:31 and more. The rhema used here implies there is power in the word as it is spoken as given to the prophet by the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, the word is often spoken from a visitation culture – see Samuel, Daniel. In the New Testament, the word is generally spoken from a habitational culture. The Holy Spirit inhabits the Christian and speaks through him or her.

Why Are People Leaving California?

leaving californiaQuite a message I got at my church Sunday. We were challenged without restraint to stand up for what we believed in even as our basic freedoms are being challenged by those who are failing to lead. The pastor’s message was cryptic at times, much like John’s message in Revelation, but the words were shear prophecy. His text was Acts 13:1-12. In verses 13.3-4 we see the nature of the mission. In 13:5 we see the manner of presentation. In the same verse the authority is defined (2 sources). In verses 6-8 you see the nature f the opposition.  Then you see the intervention of the Holy Spirit (13:9), how he dealt with the opposition (13:8-11) and the result (1:12).   Everything there is available to the Church today. Nothing is really changed for the Church today.

I also just got a letter from my senator,  a leader in the senate. He implied he has to follow the President and party. I’ve got to write back. For heaven’s sale, this is not a democracy. It’s a Constitutional Republic and he has to follow the Constitution. If you need to change that, the Constitution defines how to do that. Neither he. the President, or Congress can change that. Hatfield knew that. What about my senator?

You really want to know where the majority stands? Check the Uhaul rates for moving from Pasadena to Portland. Now check the rates to move from Portland to Pasadena. It will cost you two to three times as much to move away from California to Portland than moving from Portland to Pasadena. Same thing if  move from Pasadena to Austin, TX or vice versa. Why is that? Supply and demand. Most people move away from California that to California by a large, large factor. Go figure. Better figure quickly, as we vote next year.

Some years ago I was in Washington, D.C and lunched with a lady who had just lost her job as executive secretary for a leading senator. The senator had just lost an election and was devastated. He didn’t see it coming. He didn’t know where to go from that, as he had no skills in any other area. The lady I lunched with had plenty of skills. She would do fine. Point made. Gotta write my senator again…
