What does this mean? What does it mean to walk with a dreamer or creative person?

Years ago I was at a conference in Kansas City in which Ken Medema was the worship leader. One evening my wife (Sandy, who was still alive at that time) and I were eating dinner with Ken and his wife, Jane. Just the four of us. Ken is a physically blind musician (from birth), but sees more than I ever will. You can purchase his DVD’s, but that is not really completely fair. In a “performance”, he is really taking you into a relational experience and often highly interactive. Very healing. As we ate, Jane shared with us.

“Carl,” Ken’s been banging his head against the wall this afternoon. I’m worried about that.”

“Were you doing that, Ken”? I asked.

“Yes,” Ken said. “I was trying to create the music for tonight. It wasn’t coming.”

I am listening to Ken. Why does the birthing process for the healing have to come from pain?

That evening I sat in the audience as Ken moved to the piano and began his playing, taking us into a story set to music that we quickly saw was Pilgrim’s Progress. The music flowed as we were taken into the story, traveling with this pilgrim and no longer even in the conference hall.

Much later, as Ken finished, we rose with a standing ovation and thunderous applause. And then it hit me as I turned to my Sandy.
“He can’t see this. He is blind. Yet he sees more than I do.”

Alone, I moved to the end of the row and walked down through the crowd to where Ken still sat quietly at the piano as the applause continued. I put my arms around Ken. Suddenly, I seemed hit with thousands of volts of electricity. He hadn’t come “down” yet from his created experience. I staggered back, trying to keep from falling. No problem. Ken would not let me fall.

Years later I tried this again with Ken in a church in Illinois. He had just done his “Flying, like a Jet Plane” song and I grabbed him again on stage with a big hug. Then, Ken lifted me up and swung me in a circle around him around and around, holding me tightly against the centrifugal forces pulling me out. At the same time, he broke into his song about the jet plane again.

Suppose you were at a conference with this very creative dreamer who is led by a strange Spirit that has no labels. Would you have the courage to step up and experience it with him? What I have seen is that often in conferences with him the children have no problem stepping up. They trust. Most of the time they have little wounding from past experiences. With adults, however, I see everything from a woman who has been hurt so many times she can’t start any real intimacy who begins sharing on a mike with Ken (who writes her a special song) to an Episcopalian pastor dancing in the aisle.

The Characters in “Healing of the Hearts”

Many of the lead characters in Carl’s Christian novel “Breaking Light: Healing of the Hearts” (soon to be published) are inspired by real people. The names of the real people are never given. Try to identify who they are. Mark, the American President, is created from a real person. The quotes of the person are scattered in the book. The message Mark gives in the last chapter on a mountain in Switzerland to 18 of his spiritual warriors is created from the outline of a message given by the real person. And now I ache to hear that message again from a real-life pastor to his church. I never have. The outline was used by Moses in Duet 11.

The story is set in the year 2032. The American President at that time is a sociopath(1). Of the Senate leaders, one has senile dementia and involved in illegal actions, another is mentally unbalanced. Neither the Senate or House is willing to hold the President accountable for his actions.The southern border is open and terrorists are taking advantage of that. The IRS has overstepped its power and no one has stopped them, the government is mandating an educational system loaded with propaganda. The government is exercising surveillance without regard to any laws. There are wars in the Middle East that threaten America and there is no intelligent foreign policy. Congress is ignoring their Constitutional mandate to impeach and put the President on trial as the President continues to play golf, vacations, gives fund-raising speeches, lies and is lost to any reality.

Inside of this context steps a lonely young man hiking in the wilderness. It’s not just a physical wilderness, but also an emotional and spiritual wilderness. His church (with a little “c”), as most churches, has yet to pick up arms in a battle that defines if America can even continue to exist. There, deep in the wilderness, the young man meets Church. This Church will change his life forever, but could cost him his life.

The lion has roared again.

Here are some excerpts from the second volume of the”Breaking Light” novel series by Carl. This second book of the series is not shipping yet, but continues in development with work often starting early the morning. Enjoy these excerpts Thanks to everyone who has helped me on this. Writing this story has been more fun than any book I’ve done. These excerpts have not passed the final edit.


God is at Work in America – Pray

StatueOfLibertyIn 1776 a restlessness was stirring in the American colonies. Fueled by increasing taxes, the colonies felt helpless against their mother country. In addition, as a result of the Great Awakening of 1720- 1745, People were tired of a dying religious institution and king telling them what to believe and how to worship. By 1960 they were getting more than angry at their relationship with England. The Revolutionary War began in 1775. In 1776, it was Thomas Paine who used a press to print a series of articles called Common Sense that rallied the colonies of American to throw off their yoke of slavery and be free:

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.”

Just as Luther did more than two centuries earlier, Paine’s publishing created a “swarm“ that rallied the demoralized American colonies and led to a free nation.

Today, again, America is restless. Fueled by high taxes that go to illegal aliens, immorality, greedy lawlessness, the absence of leadership, a broken Bill of Rights, and a failing church, a swarm arises again today that is united by the Internet and what’s left of a broken social media, and instead using the Internet to unite and build a new community of Jesus people that love, heal, believe, and lead.

We see crazy politics going on. We don’t see the White Knight. Or is there one? God is at work in all of this. If you don’t see it, ask God to show it to you, because He wants you to see it and your part in it. The greatest problem Jesus had with his disciples was their unbelief and lack of faith (Matt. 17:14-21)

Healing of the Hearts (Book 2)

Healing of the Hearts


In the second book of the Breaking Light series, Healing of the Hearts (not out yet), the new President is aware creative commons: Healing of the heartthere is much wounding and a deep need for healing and reconciliation, even within the church. Mark Pearson, as the new President,  has a vision to lead the nation to this healing and to an awakening by mobilizing the church, in unity, to take the lead.

Mark is saying in a pre-inaugural speech to Christian leaders:

‘I want to see a significant work of God in the restoring of America.’

I want to see healing, reconciliation, and a bold work of the Holy Spirit in this nation. I believe it can happen.”

Soon you see a flashback from 2033 to 2014: a wounded soldier is brought back from the Middle East and is at Walter Reed Hospital. He is on life support and critical. From his bed, the soldier stares at the ceiling and has no voluntary movement. Paralyzed. The soldier’s father, a billionaire businessman, offers to pay a famous and wealthy Christian singer whatever she asks if she can bring his son out of wherever this is – and they don’t know what it is, yet. The businessman only pays if she is successful, but he believes God can use her for the healing. Down the hall from the soldier is a second soldier with his face blown away by an IED and now blind and angry. The singer realizes the blind and angry soldier holds the key she needs for the healing of the soldier on Life Support. The singer will need more than her angelic voice and prodigious beauty to see it happen.

In some posts here soon, you will see each of the key characters in the book are created from people who have inspired me deeply: The President, the singer. a very famous doctor, a German theologian, and more. Every one exists or existed in real life. The soldier on life support and paralyzed? That’s me. In 1989 I was suddenly paralyzed from the shoulders down and told by the doctors I would never walk again. I walk today by God’s grace.

The Battle for Your Heart

I love the part in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings: Two Towers where Gandalf marches into the castle where King Theoden lives as a destroyed gelding of his former self, bound by his demons. With a few rhema words spoken in authority, the King is released and transformed before your eyes. Theoden is really still the gelding, however. He is still bound. He’s not the stallion yet.

Even as Theoden celebrates his healing, we see the dark army marching to Rohan. The army has a single purpose: to decimate the world of men. Villages are burned, women and kids are slaughtered. With each day, they are closer to Rohan.



Aragorn: There is a war going on.
King Theoden: I will not risk open war.
Aragorn: Open war is upon you, whether you risk it or not.

What does this say about the Church? To quote John Eldredge, “Things are not what they seem. This is a world at war. Each of us has a crucial role to play”.

“Friends, we are now in the midst of an epic battle, a brutal and vicious war against an Enemy who knows his time is short. Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not”
John Eldredge, Waking the Dead

It is important to realize, however, that this is a battle of the heart, an affair of the heart. Our hearts must come to a place of enlightenment where we can see in the Spirit.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.”

Who is the Leader? Tolkien’s Houses of Healing

Tolkien’s Houses of Healing (Lord of the Rings)

When watching the movie as you get to the end, Aragorn is crowned king. Why? Is this something he inherited? Was he that good at slaying all the bad guys? Was he some kind of leader – if so why did they think he was this leader? The answer lies in the Houses of Healing with the words spoken by Ioreth.

The Houses of Healing were omitted from the movie, and Jackson barely mentions the Houses of Healing in the extended version of the movie. In the book version, what happens in the Houses of Healing are the focal point of the entire book trilogy. After the battle three of our heroes lay dying in the Houses of Healing after the battle. The city has been destroyed by the enemy and even the gates are torn down (America today?). Aragorn, who they expected to be the coming King, has left for the Paths of the Dead with his few followers, a place from which no human has ever returned alive (Jesus analogy?). No one has heard from Frodo and his friend Sam (little haflings less than four feet tall) since they left for the dark territory to throw the ring in the volcano from which it was forged, saving Middle Earth. Denathor, the Steward of the City (there had been no King for a long time) had given up hope and committed suicide. Denethor had also tried to kill his son. Faramir now lies near death in another of the Houses of Healing. Lady Eowyn, another of our heroes, also lies dying. Merry, the hafling (hobbit) that tried to help Eowyn fight the witch queen. is also near death.

At this point Ioreth, eldest of the women who served the houses, looks on the sad situation and weeps as she says :

Would that there were kings in Gondor, as there were once upon a time, they say! For it is said in old lore that the hands of the king are the hands of a healer. And so the rightful king could ever be known.

Unknown to them, however, Aragorn has returned and is now camped at with his men just outside the city. Soon he has entered the Houses of Healing and heals all three of our heroes. I fell to the floor as I read them, weeping. Get the book and read the story of the three healings Tolkien repeats Ioreth’s line again and again in the book, almost as if it is the drumbeat of the heart of Tolkien’s message. (It is.) What was Aragorn’s real name? What did it mean? (It’s in Tolkien’s chapter on the healings.)

Finally comes the big moment that Aragorn is crowned as King. Now Ioreth is shouting the line, only to be drowned out by the trumpets before she can complete the line. This forces the reader to complete the line in his or her head, and in so doing take ownership on it’s truth. (Tolkien is tricky here!) The next time she starts the line (as instruction to her cousin) she doesn’t get the first word out, and you find yourself saying the entire line. Tolkien tricks you again..

Jackson, in none of the film versions, ever uses this key line. Jesus is the King. He is King not only because he has authority, but He also has the power. He is also the healer. Ioreth, the wise old elder in the Houses of Healing, carries the message of the book. Jackson never gives that line to you in the movies.

As you vote at both the Federal and local levels, you see a broken nation rift with lost values and dishonesty. We need the healers. Who do you see is best at leading that? Why? Who has been open and honest with you? What are their values? How have they lived them?
