Charlie Reese’s last column – 555 People

Charley Reese’s Final ColumnCharley Reese is retiring. Below here is a copy of his last column. I know many will miss this southern gentleman. He had a great run and we are all better off for it.Farewell, Mr. Reese, and thank you. Charley Reese has been a journalist for 49 years. Be sure to read the list of Taxes at the end. This column is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be – read it!! The article is completely neutral, not anti-republican or democrat.Charlie Reese has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgmentsmade that impact each one of us every day. It’s a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!555 PEOPLE–By Charlie ReesePoliticians are the only people in the world whocreate problems and then campaign against them.Have you ever wondered, if both the Democratsand the Republicans are against deficits, WHYdo we have deficits?Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians areagainst inflation and high taxes, WHY do we haveinflation and high taxes? You and I don’t propose a federal budget. ThePresident does. You and I don’t have the Constitutional authorityto vote on appropriations. The House ofRepresentatives does. You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does. You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does. You and I don’t control monetary policy, theFederal Reserve Bank does. One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, onePresident, and nine Supreme Court justicesequates to 555 human beings out of the 300million are directly, legally, morally, andindividually responsible for the domesticproblems that plague this country.I excluded the members of the Federal ReserveBoard because that problem was created by theCongress. In 1913, Congress delegated itsConstitutional duty to provide a sound currencyto a federally chartered, but PRIVATE, centralbank.I excluded all the special interests and lobbyistsfor a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, acongressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician$1 million dollars in cash. The politician has thepower to accept or reject it. No matter what thelobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibilityto determine how he votes. Those 555 human beings spend much of their energyconvincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless ofparty. What separates a politician from a normal humanbeing is an excessive amount of gall. No normalhuman being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President forcreating deficits….. The President can onlypropose a budget. He cannot force the Congressto accept it.The Constitution, which is the supreme law of theland, gives sole responsibility to the House ofRepresentatives for originating and approvingappropriations and taxes. House members, not the President, can approve any budget theywant. If the President vetoes it, they can pass itover his veto if they agree to.It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300million cannot replace 555 people who standconvicted — by present facts — of incompetenceand irresponsibility. I can’t think of a singledomestic problem that is not traceable directly tothose 555 people. When you fully grasp the plaintruth that 555 people exercise the power of thefederal government, then it must follow thatwhat exists is what they want to exist. If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want itunfair. If the budget is in the red, it’s because they wantit in the red ..If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistanit’s because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan …If they do not receive social security but are onan elite retirement plan not available to the people,it’s because they want it that way. There are no insoluble government problems.Do not let these 555 people shift the blame tobureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs theycan abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advicethey can reject; to regulators, to whom they givethe power to regulate and from whom they cantake this power. Above all, do not let them conyou into the belief that there exists disembodiedmystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or”politics” that prevent them from doing whatthey take an oath to do.Those 555 people, and they alone, are responsible. They, and they alone, have the power..They, and they alone, should be held accountableby the people who are their bosses.Provided the voters have the gumption to managetheir own employees…We should vote all of them out of office andclean up their mess!Charlie Reese is a former columnist of theOrlando Sentinel Newspaper. What you do with this article now that you haveread it……… Is up to you. This might be funny if it weren’t so true.Be sure to read all the way to the end:Tax his land,Tax his bed,Tax the table,At which he’s fed.Tax his tractor,Tax his mule,Teach him taxesAre the rule.Tax his work,Tax his pay,He works for peanuts anyway!Tax his cow,Tax his goat,Tax his pants,Tax his coat.Tax his ties,Tax his shirt,Tax his work,Tax his dirt.Tax his tobacco,Tax his drink,Tax him if heTries to think.Tax his cigars,Tax his beers,If he criesTax his tears.Tax his car,Tax his gas,Find other waysTo tax his ass.Tax all he hasThen let him knowThat you won’t be doneTill he has no dough. When he screams and hollers; Then tax him some more,Tax him tillHe’s good and sore. Then tax his coffin,Tax his grave,Tax the sod inWhich he’s laid…Put these wordsUpon his tomb,Taxes drove meto my doom…’When he’s gone,Do not relax,Its time to applyThe inheritance tax..Accounts Receivable TaxBuilding Permit TaxCDL license TaxCigarette TaxCorporate Income TaxDog License TaxExcise TaxesFederal Income TaxFederal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)Fishing License TaxFood License TaxFuel Permit TaxGasoline Tax (currently 44.75 cents per gallon)Gross Receipts TaxHunting License TaxInheritance TaxInventory TaxIRS Interest Charges IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)Liquor TaxLuxury TaxesMarriage License TaxMedicare TaxPersonal Property TaxProperty TaxReal Estate TaxService Charge TaxSocial Security TaxRoad Usage TaxRecreational Vehicle TaxSales TaxSchool TaxState Income TaxState Unemployment Tax (SUTA)Telephone Federal Excise TaxTelephone Federal Universal Service Fee TaxTelephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge TaxesTelephone Minimum Usage Surcharge TaxTelephone Recurring and Nonrecurring Charges TaxTelephone State and Local TaxTelephone Usage Charge TaxUtility TaxesVehicle License Registration TaxVehicle Sales TaxWatercraft Registration TaxWell Permit TaxWorkers Compensation TaxSTILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY? 1. 100+435+1+9=545, not 555.

  2. none

  4. Read this!

  5. Susan Freiman says:

555? One plus 435 plus 100 plus 9 = 545, doesn’t it? Maybe spend a little more money on education.

  6. Ted Tanner says:

    Thank you.

  7. I love this and have seen it before but was wishing it would come around again so I can take part of it and use it at TEA Party Rallies like the one in Springfield IL on the 15th of April at the Capitol building at noon. Hope you are joining us.

  8. John Turnbill says:

    It’s 545, not 555.100 Senators, 435 members of the U.S. House, 1 President, and 9 Supreme Court Justices. = 545

  9. BILL VOM WEG says:

1 TERM LIMITS IS THE WAY TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM.TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS. WE WILL TAKE TURNS. YOU DO SOME. I’LL DO SOME. YOUR FRIENDS WILL DO SOME. MY FRIENDS WILL DO SOME. WE OUT NUMBER THE POWERS THAT BE 2100 PERCENT.GLOBAL SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AND EFFORT BUYS FREEDOM AND SECURITY. (NO ONE CAN DO EVERYTHING BUT THE MAJORITY OR US CAN EACH DO SOME THINGS THAT BENEFIT OURSELVES AND OTHERS, THE COMMON GOOD. THE MAJORITY 80% WILL RECIPROCATE. OUR CONTRYMEN WHO ARE, FIGHTIMG AND DIEING, OUT OF WORK, UNDER EMPLOYED, IN DEBT, ILL, WORN OUT, HAVE SUFFERED MAN MADE OF NATURAL DISASTER COULD BE US IF WE DO NOT WORK FOR THE COMMON GOOD. WE DO NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT BUT IT IS IN OUR ENLIGHTENED SELF-INTEREST TO DO BETTER.)CHARLES REESE STATED THE PROBLEM IN A NON PARTISAN WAY MANY CAN UNDERSTAND AND IN QUALITY WAY THAT MADE HIM A LIVING. IT IS IN OUR ENLIGHTENED SELF-INTEREST TO MAKE CHANGE THAT HAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF CORRECTING THE PROPLEM. PRODUCTION IS IN THE SYSTEM. IT IS NOT THE PERSON OR THE PARTY. MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO RUN FOR OFFICE ARE GOOD PEOPLE WHEN THEY START. THE SYSTEM IS STACKED AGAINST THE HONEST OBJECTIVE PERSON.MOST OF THE PEOPLE YOU AND I KNOW, 80%, ARE REASONABLY GOOD PEOPLE ABLE TO MAKE OBJECTIVE COMPROMISES FOR THE COMMON GOOD IF THEY WERE TO SERVE AS AN ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE FOR ONE TERM. WHAT IT TAKES TO DO THE COMMON GOOD REPRESENTATION IS AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE MOTIVATION TO LOOK AFTER ONE’S ENLIGHTENED SEFT-INTEREST AND HAVE AND IDEA OF OUR SACRED HONOR. (THE OTHER 20% OF THE PEOPLE WE KNOW: 10% ARE CRIMINAL OR DEVIANT TO VARIOUS DEGREES AND 10% JUST DO NOT GIVE A DAMN.)GRANTED A PERCENTAGE OF THE REASONABLY GOOD PEOPLE WE KNOW DO NOT HAVE THE CONFIDENCE IN THEIR OWN ABILITY TO BE REPRESENTATIVES. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO BE ONE OF THOSE POLITICIANS THE LIKES OF POLITICIANS WE HAVE SEEN FOR DECADES. ANOTHER PERCENTAGE WE MIGHT FIND LACKING IN THE SOCIAL GRACES LIKE EFFECTIVE SPEAKING EXPERIENCE, ORGANIZATIONAL EXPERIENCE, MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE OR MOTIVATION TO PAY THE PRICE OF EFFORT TO RUN FOR OFFICE AND SERVE FOR 6 YEARS.WE THE PEOPLE SHOULD PICK THE 2 TO 4 OF THE BEST PEOPLE WE HAVE IN EACH VOTING DISTRICT AND EACH STATE AND ASK THEM TO DO US THE HONOR OF REPRESENTING US HONESTLY FOR ONE TERM. AS PART OF OUR ENLIGHTENED SELF-INTEREST WE SHOULD WORK TO GET THEM ELECTED FOR ONE 6 YEAR TERM. THE NEXT 5 YEARS WE CAN LET THEM CARRY THE BALL FOR US AND THE MANAGEMENT OF GOVERMENT. GLOBAL SHARED RESPONSIBILITY AND EFFORT BUYS FREEDOM AND SECURITY.

  11. The ONLY, repeat ONLY thing that will make them pay attention is on the next several elections the voter turnout would be less than 10%. Did you notice how the people wanted the phrase “none of the above” on ballots. Never happened. When we can have the NO VOTE support only then will these shills listen to the people.

  12. Awsome Article!!

  13. Read this TO your congressman and senator. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Re-Visit the movie Its a Wonderful Life, says it all

  15. There is another way; it involves the shedding of blood.

  16. “One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 555 human beings”Actually it comes to 545

  17. Robert olson says:

Why can’t even Congressmen like Ron Paul see the USA gold at Ft Knox? Maybe not there?Does the private company known as the federal reserve bank now possess our gold?

  18. Jay Greenstein says:

It’s neither his last column, nor was it written after 2001, when he did retire. We weren’t in either Iraq of Afghanistan, and there was no poem attached. Someone has taken the actual column (written in the 1980′s and updated several times till he retired, and embellished it, heavily.

Go to Snopes and find the original. His words, unmodified, are better written, more focused, and have more impact because of that..

  19. Georgie Kunkel says:

It is easy to trash Congress when it is the people who are responsible for government.
If not attended to, government runs amok of course. And technological gadgets have
distracted people from doing this attending to government for too long.

Technology does not have to rule if people look up and begin to take back command of their
lives and the government. Technology is only a tool. Let’s begin to use our minds and
hearts instead of forgetting to live in the real world in favor of engrossing ourselves in
    our gadgets.

  20. byron snearl says:

This article will clarify who is really responsible for our country’s problems.

  21. jacqui tanner says:

The bastardization of Charley Reese’s 1985 and. 1995 articles and adding the poem at he end of the now circulating “chain email” is quite interesting. Mr Reese’s work stands on its own and should not be watered down by annoying “chain email”.Regards, Jacqui Tanner

    PS. IT IS THE 545 (1 Pres + 100 senate + 435 House + 9 Supreme Court)

  22. Nothing has changed… in 30+ years (only the players names…both Reps and Dems ) This system is rigged to keep the honest taxpaying worker in the dark… Both sides posture in public for the press and when no one watches they pat each other on the back for deceiving us.
